Our pillars

Four pillars, one landscape

Restoration, research, regenerative agriculture and learning on the same ground.

What we do

Four pillars, one landscape

Conservation at Kijiko is not a fence around trees. It is a working demonstration that restoration, livelihoods and science can run on the same 65 acres. Our work is organised into four interlinking pillars.

01

Agroforestry & Ecosystem Restoration

Seedlings for afforestation, reforestation and medicinal planting. More than 600 indigenous trees planted and maintained since 2018, protecting the area’s last remaining forest and rebuilding habitat for its wildlife.

02

Biochar & Bio-fertilizer R&D

Turning agricultural residues into biochar, charged bio-fertilizer and clean-burning briquettes, linking farmers to soil health and carbon markets, in collaboration with SINTEF Energi.

03

Regenerative Agriculture

Integrated dairy, poultry, crop and coffee production on agroecological principles, using legume ground cover, integrated pest management and no harmful herbicides.

04

Agritourism, Recreation & Learning

Farm and forest walks, camping and guesthouse stays where visitors experience how agriculture, nature and conservation interlink, and every visit teaches something.

How it fits together

Interlinked, not separate

Each pillar feeds the others. Restoration supplies the forest and nursery that make the site a living classroom; the farm generates the residues that feed the biochar work; the biochar returns carbon and fertility to the soil; and agritourism shares all of it with the people who visit. Taking stock is central to how we work, and we have identified the tree species in the forest and are doing the same with the herbs, small mammals, birds and insects.
