The Kijiko area was once covered by extensive lakeside forest which was cleared over the years for farming, timber and fuel energy needs. This led to loss of plant and animal diversity in what used to be evergreen tropical forest. The forest at KC marks the only remaining forest in the area. It is home to over 120 tree species belonging to 80 genera and 40 families (out of the 92 – or 43% – documented in Uganda). Red-tail monkeys, tree hyraxes, otters, turacos, kingfishers, monitor lizards and other species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, fungi and other yet identified organisms also abound in the forest.
At Kijiko Conservation, we provide a space for you to come, retreat, discover and share some of the values of nature. You can learn and participate in the restoration of biodiversity or experience and unearth the importance of natural medicines derived from plants and herbs.
What we are doing.
Agritourism: at Kijiko Conservation includes exposure visits by groups, communities and individuals to learn and experience the interlinkages between agricultural processes, nature and conservation.
Agroforestry: This is anchored on producing a range of traditional and exotic seedlings to support the afforestation, reforestation and growing of medicinal plants.
Sustainable Production: at the Kijiko Conservation farm comprises of integrated dairy, crop and poultry activities that yield organic produce for consumption and sale.
Culture, Arts and Learning: All activities undertaken at Kijiko Conservation generate lessons on the content of our work and the processes that we use to implement that work, providing a fertile environment for art and learning.
Why we are doing it.
Kijiko Conservation prioritises environmental conservation for:
- Aesthetics – we believe that humans are intrinsically connected to nature as this reveals beauty and awakens inner consciousness, and in turn providing physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits.
- Ecological ethics – human beings are a part of the environment and so are other living things. Plants and animals should not only be supported to live in coexistence but also recognised as being integral and inseparable from our lives.
- Recreation – we take recreation to be a wholesome activity undertaken not only for pleasure and relaxation but also for refreshing one’s mental wellbeing. Our guests are able to plunge into nature and experience first-hand the therapeutic sounds of the forest, the scent of the trees, the buzzing of insects, or rustling of leaves. These help to ease stress, promote relaxation, and restore good mood and vitality.
How we are doing it
Taking stock: We have taken stock and identified all the tree species in the forest and are doing the same with the herbs, small mammals, birds, and insects. With the knowledge gained thus far, we have developed a good understanding of the forest’s medicinal, timber, and other socio-economic values. We also know what needs to be done to improve and protect the stock and diversity of plants and animals. For example, we have planted and maintained over 600 indigenous trees, in addition to sharing our learnings with guests.
Learning from experience: Our agritourism and sustainable production are the result of practical, personal and group experience. We host a number of farmer groups who take farm tours to share in our learnings from integrated production and agroforestry
